I live and work in Chicago. My best friend has graduated from law school in May of 2010. I wasn't able to attend and I didn't get her a gift because I didn't know what to get her. She just informed me that she passed the IL bar exam and I'd like to get her a gift that reflects our long lasting friendship and her achievement.
We met in high-school, went to the same college, were roommates, and even studied abroad together. As adults we don't get to hang out as much or talk to each other much, but we stay in communication well enough.
The problem is, I have no idea what to purchase. I don't want to get her the typical boring expensive Montblanc pen, business card holder, or scales, a name plate, etc. for her desk. I don't want to get a monogrammed portfolio or briefcase or law dictionary.
I want something more meaningful. I wanted to buy her a statue of a black woman lawyer but cannot find one. My brother received a black doctor in a lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck when he graduated from medical school but I have no idea who create this. I assumed I'd be able to find the woman lawyer statue.
NOT!
My thought was to give her the statue and a few meaningful books regarding blacks and women in the law profession but I have no idea which ones I should get.
I would love to get some ideas from anyone with serious suggestions. I'd hate to just give her a card and some money, that seems so cold and generic but I'm running out of ideas.
Any help is greatly appreciated.|||How about an engraved paper weight for the desk, that says "LAWYERED" Cute idea?|||A conscience without compromise.|||how about a very nice bottle of wine if she drinks at all.
